Loudness DSP has been stagnant for decades – focusing on minor improvements in some areas that come with their own disadvantages in other areas.
Imagine having the highest quality clipper and limiter, with every setting and knob (including their actual routing!) controlled with per-sample accuracy to ensure that each individual sample is treated in the most transparent way possible.
While a well tuned clipper sounds great on transients, it can easily lead to audible distortion on sustained notes, making the audio overly harsh and crunchy.
A limiter on the other hand sounds much better in such cases, but has the disadvantage of suppressing transients, robbing the audio of its punch and weight.
